Ceylon 1942

XI Squadron were based at Colombo racecourse in Ceylon having moved from the Middle East.

Initially under the command of W/C A. J. M. Smythe and then W/C R. N. Bateson XI were equipped with the Blenheim IV.

Withn three weeks of arrival in Ceylon the squadron became involved in the Japanese atacks of Easter 1942. On 10th April during a high level attack on the Japanese fleet one Blenheim was shot down by flak and a further four fell to Japanese fighters.

This excellent photo was sent in by Hary Hewitt who was a rigger on XI from Jan 1942 to Jan 1946. The CO at this time was W/C Bateson who subsequently went on to lead the famous Mosquito raid on Gestapo HQ in the Hague.

Thoe of you that have been following the tales of the Squadron Mascots over the years will recognise "Burgess" the Boss's pet Lion Cub.
